About this tool
Enter the value of the estate after funeral costs, debts and any will, then the surviving heirs: husband or wives, sons, daughters, father and mother. The tool gives each heir's fractional share and amount using the fixed shares and residue rules, and applies awl or radd when shares do not add up to the whole.
What it covers
This tool covers the closest heirs only: spouse, children, father and mother. It does not handle grandchildren, grandparents, brothers and sisters, or uncles and aunts, which change the result in many families.
The main rules used
A husband receives one half, or one quarter when there are children. Wives share one quarter, or one eighth with children. The mother receives one sixth with children and one third without. The father receives one sixth with children and takes the residue when there are no sons. Daughters receive one half if one and two thirds if more, unless there are sons, in which case a son receives twice a daughter's share.
Please consult a scholar
Inheritance law has many cases and schools of thought. Use this as a first estimate and have a qualified scholar or court confirm the shares.
Worked example
An estate of 1,200,000 with a wife, one son and one daughter: the wife receives 1/8 = 150,000; the remaining 1,050,000 is split 2:1, so the son receives 700,000 and the daughter 350,000.
Tips for best results
Check every box before you rely on a result, because one wrong digit changes the whole answer. Use the exact figures from your payslip, bill, certificate or contract, and keep a note of the date you calculated. Rates, thresholds and rules change from time to time, so for tax, fees and legal matters treat the output as an estimate and confirm with the official source named on this page. You can run as many scenarios as you like; nothing is saved or sent, and refreshing the page clears the boxes.

Frequently asked questions
Which heirs are included?
Husband or wives, sons, daughters, father and mother. Other relatives are not covered.
What are awl and radd?
Awl reduces all shares in proportion when they add up to more than the estate. Radd returns the remainder to the sharers when there is no residuary heir.
Should debts and the will come first?
Yes. Funeral costs, debts and a bequest of up to one third are taken out before the heirs share.
Is this a legal ruling?
No. It is an educational estimate; consult a qualified scholar or the court.
