About this tool
Type a password to see its length, the types of characters, an entropy estimate in bits and a rough time to guess it. The check runs in your browser and the password is never sent or saved.
How to read it
Longer is stronger. Entropy in bits grows with length and with a wider mix of characters. Above about 60 bits is good for most accounts, and above 80 is strong. Common words and patterns are weaker than the estimate suggests.
Tips
Use a long passphrase of several unrelated words or a random password from a manager. Use a different password for every account and switch on two-step login.
Frequently asked questions
Is my password sent anywhere?
No. It is checked in your browser.
Should I test my real password?
Prefer testing a similar one. The check is safe, but real passwords are best kept private.
What is entropy?
A measure of how many guesses would be needed.
What makes a password weak?
Short length, common words, names, dates and keyboard patterns.
