About this tool
Enter your yearly usage in kWh, the unit rate in pence per kWh and the daily standing charge in pence. The calculator adds the usage cost and the standing charge and shows the yearly and monthly bill. Look up the rates on your bill or tariff page.
Where to find the numbers
Your bill or tariff shows the unit rate (pence per kWh) and the standing charge (pence per day). Typical household use is about 2,700 kWh of electricity and 11,500 kWh of gas a year, though homes vary a lot.
Example
2,700 kWh at 27p per kWh is £729, plus a standing charge of 55p a day (£200.75), making about £930 a year or £77 a month.
Tips
Rates include VAT on a typical bill. Run it for gas and electricity separately and add them. A smart meter reading gives better accuracy than an estimate.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my kWh use?
On your bill or in your online account, or from your smart meter.
What is the standing charge?
A fixed daily fee for being connected, whatever you use.
Why does my bill differ?
Rates change, and bills based on estimates are corrected by meter readings.
Do prices include VAT?
Domestic bills carry 5 percent VAT. Tariff rates are normally shown including it.
