About this tool
Enter your gross income and filing status. The calculator subtracts the standard deduction and applies the federal tax brackets to show your tax, marginal rate, effective rate and income after federal tax. Figures are for the 2026 tax year and can change. A guide only, check irs.gov or a tax professional.
How the brackets work
US income tax is progressive. Each rate applies only to the slice of income inside its bracket, so moving into a higher bracket does not tax all of your income at the higher rate. The 2026 standard deduction used here is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for married filing jointly and $24,150 for head of household.
Example
A single filer with $85,000 income has $68,900 of taxable income. The federal tax is about $9,000, an effective rate near 10.6 percent, even though the top slice is taxed at 22 percent.
Not included
State tax, FICA, credits such as the child tax credit, itemized deductions and the qualified business income deduction are not modelled.
Frequently asked questions
What is the marginal tax rate?
The rate on your last dollar of taxable income. It is not applied to all of your income.
Is the standard deduction automatic?
Yes, unless you choose to itemize, which is worth it only when your itemized deductions are larger.
Does this include state tax?
No. State income tax varies and is not included. Several states have none.
Is FICA included?
No. Social Security and Medicare tax are separate. Use the FICA calculator for those.
