How shobfree.com works
Our tools run inside your browser. Your PDF, photo or text is opened and changed on your own device, and it is never sent to our server.
What runs where
When you open a tool, your browser downloads a small program. Merging, compressing, converting, calculating and editing then happen on your phone or computer. The server only sends you the page, the blog and the contact form. It never receives your files.
Try a live test
This test builds a 20 page PDF in your browser and counts how many network requests were made while it ran. Nothing in it is uploaded.
Check it yourself with your browser
- Open any tool, for example Compress PDF.
- Open your browser's developer tools (F12, or Ctrl+Shift+I, or Cmd+Option+I) and choose the Network tab.
- Choose a file and press Convert. Watch the list of requests.
- You will see downloads of the page and its code. You will not see any request that sends your file. No POST request carries your document.
- Switch your device to flight mode after the tool has loaded. Most tools still work, which shows the work is local.
What the server does
The server delivers pages, runs the blog and sends the contact form to us. Page views and general statistics are collected with Google Analytics, and ads are shown by Google AdSense. These services never receive your files or their contents.
Limits to know
Your device does the work, so very large files can be slow on an old phone and the first use of OCR downloads language data. Converting Word, Excel and PowerPoint redraws the pages instead of using Microsoft Office, so complex layouts can differ. Planners such as the expense tracker keep your entries in your browser storage, which you can clear at any time.
Questions
Is my file really never uploaded?
Right. The tools read the file with your browser and write the result back to your device. You can confirm this in the Network tab.
Why do some tools take time to start?
The first time, the browser downloads the tool's code, and OCR also downloads language data. After that it is cached.
Does it work offline?
After a tool has loaded, the work itself needs no connection.
What do you store?
Only small settings in your browser such as your pinned tools and, for planners, the entries you typed. None of it leaves your device.
