About this tool
Enter the gas you used from your meter, say whether it is metric (m³) or imperial (100s of ft³), and the calorific value from your bill. The converter applies the volume correction factor of 1.02264 and divides by 3.6 to give kWh.
The formula
kWh = volume in m³ × 1.02264 × calorific value ÷ 3.6. The calorific value is on your gas bill, usually about 39 to 40 megajoules per m³. Imperial meters count in hundreds of cubic feet, and one unit equals 2.83 m³.
Example
150 m³ at a calorific value of 39.5 gives about 1,622 kWh. At 6.2p per kWh that is roughly £100.
Tips
This explains why a bill in kWh is larger than the number on your meter. If your meter shows m³, take the difference between two readings to get the use for that period.
Frequently asked questions
Why convert m³ to kWh?
Gas is billed in kWh, while most meters count volume.
What is the volume correction factor?
1.02264 adjusts for pressure and temperature of gas at the meter.
What is the calorific value?
The energy in each cubic metre of gas. It is printed on your bill.
How do I read an imperial meter?
The dials are in hundreds of cubic feet. Multiply a reading difference by 2.83 to get m³.
