About this tool
Choose the province and enter a price. The calculator uses the combined federal and provincial sales tax rate, GST plus PST or HST, and shows the tax and the total. Add tax to a price or take it out of a total.
How sales tax works in Canada
The federal GST is 5 percent everywhere. Some provinces combine it with their own tax into a harmonized HST, such as 13 percent in Ontario and 15 percent in the Atlantic provinces. Others charge a separate PST or QST, so the buyer pays both on a purchase.
Example
$100 in Ontario becomes $113. In British Columbia, 5 percent GST plus 7 percent PST makes $112.
Note
Basic groceries, prescriptions and some services are zero-rated or exempt. Some provinces exempt certain items from PST that the GST still covers.
