About this tool
Pick your plan and enter your yearly pay. You repay 9 percent of income above the plan threshold (6 percent for a postgraduate loan). Add your balance to see roughly how many years it takes without interest. Rates and thresholds are for the 2026-27 tax year and can change. A guide only, check gov.uk for the official figures.
The thresholds
The 2026-27 yearly thresholds used here are £26,900 for Plan 1, £29,385 for Plan 2, £33,795 for Plan 4, £25,000 for Plan 5 and £21,000 for a postgraduate loan. Repayments are taken from pay above the threshold, so a pay rise increases them only on the extra.
Example
On a Plan 2 loan and £40,000 pay, 9 percent of £10,615 is about £955 a year, or £80 a month.
Tips
Most loans are written off after 25 to 40 years depending on the plan, so many people never repay the full balance. Check your plan on your Student Finance account before you rely on a result.
Frequently asked questions
Which plan am I on?
It depends on where and when you started: Plan 1 and Plan 4 for older or Scottish courses, Plan 2 for England and Wales from 2012, Plan 5 from 2023. Your loan statement shows it.
Do I pay both a student loan and a postgraduate loan?
Yes. If you have both, you pay 9 percent over the first threshold and 6 percent over the postgraduate threshold. Run the calculator twice and add the two.
Does interest affect the result?
The years estimate ignores interest, so a real payoff takes longer. Interest does not change the monthly amount, which is set by your pay.
Is this the amount taken by my employer?
Yes, employers take it through payroll with your tax and NI. Self-employed people pay through the tax return.
