About this tool
Enter your dog's age in years and choose its size. The first year counts as about 15 human years and the second as 9 more. After that each dog year adds 4 for small, 5 for medium and 6 for large breeds.
Why not times seven?
The old rule of seven dog years per human year is too simple. Dogs mature fast in the first two years, then age at a rate that depends on size: large breeds age faster and live shorter lives.
Example
A 5-year-old medium dog is about 39 in human years: 15 for the first year, 9 for the second and 5 for each of the next three.
Care
Older dogs benefit from regular vet checks, joint care and a diet fitted to their age. Ask your vet about senior health screening.
