About this tool

Enter a year to list the eight bank holidays in England and Wales, including the substitute days when New Year's Day or Christmas falls on a weekend. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different days. Check gov.uk for any one-off holiday.

The holidays

England and Wales have eight regular bank holidays: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, the early May bank holiday (first Monday of May), the spring bank holiday (last Monday of May), the summer bank holiday (last Monday of August), Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Substitute days

When a holiday falls on a weekend, a weekday substitute is given. The table shows the usual substitute dates.

One-offs

The government sometimes adds a special day, such as a royal event. These are announced separately and are not in this list.

Frequently asked questions

Are employers required to give bank holidays?

Not by law. They count towards the 5.6 weeks of leave if the contract says so.

Does Scotland have the same days?

No. Scotland has 2 January and St Andrew's Day instead of some English days and has no bank holiday on Easter Monday.

What if Christmas is on a weekend?

Substitute weekday holidays are given, which the table shows.

Is the list updated for one-off days?

No. One-off bank holidays are announced by the government at short notice, so check gov.uk.
