About this tool

Enter monthly basic salary plus DA, HRA received, rent paid and whether you live in a metro city. The exemption is the lowest of the HRA received, rent paid minus 10 percent of basic, and 50 percent (metro) or 40 percent (non-metro) of basic.

The three limits

The exempt part of HRA is the least of: actual HRA received, rent paid minus 10 percent of basic salary, and 50 percent of basic in metro cities or 40 percent elsewhere.

Old regime only

The exemption applies to the old tax regime. The new regime does not allow it.

Records

Keep rent receipts and the landlord PAN if the yearly rent is above the threshold.

Tips for best results

Check every box before you rely on a result, because one wrong digit changes the whole answer. Use the exact figures from your payslip, bill, certificate or contract, and keep a note of the date you calculated. Rates, thresholds and rules change from time to time, so for tax, fees and legal matters treat the output as an estimate and confirm with the official source named on this page. You can run as many scenarios as you like; nothing is saved or sent, and refreshing the page clears the boxes.
