401(k)
Enter salary, your contribution, the employer match, current balance, years, return and yearly raises. The result shows your contributions, the employer's, the growth and the final balance. The 2026 employee limit is $24,500, with catch-up contributions from age 50. Always take the full match first.
Roth IRA
A Roth IRA is funded with after-tax money, and qualified withdrawals, including growth, are free of federal tax. The 2026 limit is $7,500, or $8,600 at 50 or older. $7,500 a year for 30 years at 7 percent is about $708,000.
CDs
A certificate of deposit pays a fixed APY for a fixed term. The calculator shows the interest, the interest after tax and the maturity value. Deposits are insured up to $250,000 per depositor per bank.
RMDs
You must withdraw a minimum amount from traditional accounts from age 73 (75 if born in 1960 or later). The amount is last year-end's balance divided by an IRS factor. Missing it can cost a 25 percent excise tax.
Rule of 72
Divide 72 by the rate to estimate the years to double. At 6 percent, about 12 years. It also applies to inflation: at 3 percent, prices double in about 24 years.
Tips
- Start early. Time matters more than the amount.
- Test a lower return to see how sensitive the result is.
- Fees compound too, so check your fund costs.
