Federal income tax
The calculator subtracts the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household for 2026) and applies the brackets from 10 to 37 percent. It shows your tax, marginal rate, effective rate and income after tax. Each rate applies only to the slice of income inside its bracket.
Self-employment and FICA
Employees pay 7.65 percent FICA, matched by the employer: 6.2 percent Social Security up to $184,500 and 1.45 percent Medicare. The self-employed pay both halves, 15.3 percent on 92.35 percent of net earnings, and can deduct half. The two calculators show the amounts and a quarterly set-aside.
Capital gains
Assets held more than a year get 0, 15 or 20 percent rates based on taxable income. Short-term gains are taxed as ordinary income. The tool stacks the gain on your income to find the rate. High earners may also owe a 3.8 percent net investment income tax.
Sales tax and overtime
Sales tax is a percentage of price that varies by state and city. Add it to a price, or remove it from a total. For overtime, federal law requires at least 1.5 times pay beyond 40 hours in a week, and some states add daily rules.
Tips
- Compare itemized deductions with the standard deduction.
- Make quarterly estimated payments if you are self-employed, to avoid penalties.
- State tax is separate. Several states have none.
