About this tool
Enter the price and the sales tax rate for your city or state. Choose add to get the total with tax, or remove to find the price before tax from a tax-inclusive total.
How to use it
Sales tax is a percentage of the price. To add it, multiply the price by one plus the rate. To remove it, divide the total by one plus the rate. Rates vary by state, county and city, and combined rates range from 0 percent in Oregon to well over 9 percent in some cities.
Example
$100 at 8.25 percent comes to $108.25. A $108.25 total at the same rate was $100 before tax.
Tips
Some items such as groceries or clothing are taxed at a lower rate or not at all in some states. Look up the combined rate for your location on the state revenue website.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my rate?
Use your state revenue department or the receipt from a local store, which shows the combined rate.
Is sales tax the same as VAT?
No. Sales tax is charged once at the point of sale, while VAT is charged at each stage of production.
Are all items taxed?
No. Many states exempt groceries, medicine or clothing.
How do I get the price before tax?
Choose the remove option, enter the total and the rate.
