Holiday and bank holidays

Workers get at least 5.6 weeks of paid leave, capped at 28 days. A part-timer working three days gets 16.8 days. Bank holidays can count towards that if your contract says so. England and Wales have eight regular bank holidays, and the list shows substitute days when New Year's Day or Christmas falls on a weekend.

Minimum wage

From April 2026 the National Living Wage is £12.71 an hour for ages 21 and over, £10.85 for 18 to 20 and £8.00 for under 18s and apprentices. Enter your hours to see weekly, monthly and yearly pay before tax.

Redundancy

Statutory redundancy pay needs two years of service. Each year counts half a week under 22, one week from 22 to 40 and one and a half weeks from 41, with weekly pay capped at £751 and 20 years counted. The maximum is £22,530.

Sick pay and maternity

Statutory sick pay is paid from the first day from April 2026 at the lower of £123.25 a week or 80 percent of earnings, for up to 28 weeks. Statutory maternity pay is 90 percent of earnings for six weeks and then the lower of £194.32 or 90 percent for 33 weeks.

Child benefit charge

If the higher earner in a family has income above £60,000, a tax charge of 1 percent of the benefit per £200 applies, up to 100 percent at £80,000. The calculator shows what you would keep.

Tips

  • Check your contract and any company scheme, which may pay more than the statutory minimum.
  • Keep payslips and dates of service. They are needed for most claims.
  • ACAS gives free, confidential advice on employment rights.
