National Insurance
Employees pay 8 percent on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2 percent above. The self-employed pay Class 4 at 6 percent and 2 percent. Use the NI calculator to see yearly, monthly and weekly figures, and the employer's share for comparison.
Student loan
You repay 9 percent of income above your plan threshold, or 6 percent for a postgraduate loan. The thresholds for 2026-27 are £26,900 for Plan 1, £29,385 for Plan 2, £33,795 for Plan 4, £25,000 for Plan 5 and £21,000 for a postgraduate loan. Add your balance to see how many years it could take without interest.
Capital gains and dividends
Each person has a £3,000 capital gains allowance. Gains above it are taxed at 18 percent in the basic band and 24 percent above. Dividends have a £500 allowance and are taxed at 10.75, 35.75 and 39.35 percent from April 2026. The two calculators place the gain or dividend on top of your other income to find the right band.
Self-employed and pension relief
Sole traders pay income tax and Class 4 NI on profit. The calculator also shows how much to set aside each month. For a personal pension, the provider adds 20 percent relief, and higher-rate taxpayers can claim more. The relief tool shows both.
Pay rise
A raise is taxed at your top rate, so the extra take-home is much less than the extra gross. The pay rise calculator shows your new net monthly pay.
Tips
- Keep your figures to hand: your tax code, your plan type and your payslip.
- Tax-free allowances reduce year by year when income passes £100,000.
- Pension contributions and Gift Aid reduce the income used for the child benefit charge and some other tests.
