About this tool
Enter your hourly rate, regular hours and overtime hours, then choose time and a half or double time. The calculator shows regular pay, the overtime rate, overtime pay and your gross for the week. Pay is before tax. Figures are for the 2026 tax year and can change. A guide only, check irs.gov or a tax professional.
The rule
Under federal law, most hourly employees must be paid at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states, such as California, also require overtime after 8 hours in a day and double time in some cases.
Example
At $22 an hour with 40 regular hours and 8 overtime hours at 1.5, regular pay is $880 and overtime pay is $264, for $1,144 gross.
Tips
Salaried employees who are exempt may not get overtime. Check your state labor department for the rules that apply.
