About this tool
Enter the higher earner's income and your number of children. The charge is 1 percent of the benefit for every £200 of income over £60,000, up to 100 percent at £80,000. The tool uses the 2025-26 weekly Child Benefit rates. Rates and thresholds are for the 2026-27 tax year and can change. A guide only, check gov.uk for the official figures.
The charge
Child Benefit is paid weekly, but if either partner earns more than £60,000 the higher earner pays a tax charge through Self Assessment. At £80,000 or more the charge cancels the whole benefit.
Example
With two children the yearly benefit is about £2,266. At £70,000 income the charge is 50 percent, so £1,133 is repaid in tax.
Options
You can still claim Child Benefit to protect the National Insurance credits for a non-working parent, and opt out of the payment so you do not pay the charge.
Frequently asked questions
Whose income counts?
The higher earner in the couple, based on adjusted net income.
Can I stop the payments?
Yes, you can keep claiming but opt not to receive the money, so no charge arises. This keeps the NI credits.
How do I pay the charge?
Through Self Assessment, or by tax code adjustment if you register with HMRC.
Does pension saving reduce it?
Yes. Pension contributions and Gift Aid reduce adjusted net income.
