About this tool
Enter your age this year and your account balance at the end of last year. The tool divides the balance by the distribution factor from the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table to show your required minimum distribution. It works for traditional IRAs and most 401(k) plans.
What an RMD is
Once you reach the required age, which is 73 for those born before 1960, you must withdraw a minimum amount each year from traditional retirement accounts. The amount is your prior year-end balance divided by a life expectancy factor.
Example
At 75 with $500,000, the factor is 24.6, so the RMD is about $20,325.
Notes
If your spouse is the sole beneficiary and more than ten years younger, a different table applies. Roth IRAs have no RMDs for the owner. Missing an RMD can bring a 25 percent excise tax, or 10 percent if corrected quickly.
