About this tool
Enter your average weekly earnings in the 8 weeks before the qualifying week. Statutory Maternity Pay is 90 percent of that for the first 6 weeks and then the lower of £194.32 or 90 percent for 33 weeks. Rates and thresholds are for the 2026-27 tax year and can change. A guide only, check gov.uk for the official figures.
How it works
SMP lasts up to 39 weeks. The first six weeks are at 90 percent of average weekly earnings with no upper limit. The next 33 weeks are at the flat rate or 90 percent of earnings, whichever is lower.
Example
On £600 weekly earnings, the first six weeks pay £540 a week and the next 33 weeks pay £194.32 a week, a total of about £9,650.
Eligibility
You usually need 26 weeks of service with your employer by the qualifying week and average earnings above the lower earnings limit. Some employers add occupational pay on top. Maternity Allowance can apply when SMP does not.
