About this tool
Enter the distance you drive each year, your car's efficiency in miles per kWh and the price per kWh. The calculator shows the kWh used, the yearly and monthly charging cost and the cost per mile.
How it is worked out
Energy use is distance divided by efficiency. Most electric cars achieve 3 to 4 miles per kWh in mixed driving. Cost is kWh times the price you pay, which is lower at home overnight and higher at public rapid chargers.
Example
12,000 miles at 3.5 miles per kWh is about 3,430 kWh, which costs about $549 a year at $0.16 per kWh, or 4.6 cents a mile.
Tips
Charging losses add about 10 percent between the wall and the battery, so use a slightly lower efficiency for a safe estimate. Time-of-use tariffs can cut the home price by half.
Frequently asked questions
What is a typical EV efficiency?
3 to 4 miles per kWh, or about 15 to 20 kWh per 100 miles.
Is public charging more expensive?
Yes, rapid chargers can cost two to three times the home price.
Does cold weather matter?
Yes, efficiency can drop 20 to 30 percent in winter.
How do I compare with petrol?
Divide the cost per mile by the equivalent cost per mile of a petrol car for the comparison.
