About this tool
Type or paste an IBAN, with or without spaces. The tool checks the country length and the mod-97 check digits, so it catches most typing mistakes. It does not confirm that the account exists.
How the check works
An IBAN starts with a country code and two check digits, followed by the national account number. To validate it the first four characters are moved to the end, letters become numbers (A is 10, B is 11 and so on), and the remainder when divided by 97 must be 1. Each country has a fixed length, for example 22 for Germany and the UK and 27 for France.
What it cannot do
A valid IBAN is correctly formed but may belong to a closed account. Always confirm payee details before sending money, and be careful with requests that change bank details.
Privacy
The check runs in your browser and nothing is sent.
With the boxes at their starting values (IBAN: GB82 WEST 1234 5698 7654 32), the tool shows: Country code: GB; Length: 22; Expected length: 22; Grouped: GB82 WEST 1234 5698 7654 32; Result: Looks valid. Change any box to see your own numbers. The result updates as you type, and nothing leaves your browser.
