Examples

  • A budget of 2.5 crore taka is 25 million taka.
  • A salary of 8 lakh a year is 800,000 or 0.8 million.
  • A company with 1,500 crore in sales earns 15 billion.

Reading the commas

South Asian grouping puts the first comma after three digits and then every two: 12,34,56,789. International grouping uses every three: 123,456,789. The same number is written differently, so double-check when you copy figures between reports.

Tips

  1. Convert before you compare figures from a local and a foreign source.
  2. When writing for international readers, give both, such as "10 million (1 crore)".
  3. Be careful with "billion" in old British writing, which once meant a million million.

Using the right scale in reports

Reports for international donors, banks or investors usually use millions and billions. Local newspapers and government documents use lakh and crore. A common error is to copy "5 crore" and call it "5 million", which understates the amount by half. Always convert and double-check the zeros.

Money words in Bangla

In Bangla, the same system applies: লক্ষ (lakh) and কোটি (crore). For writing amounts on cheques and invoices, it helps to write the figure and the words together, such as "50,00,000 (fifty lakh)". Use the Number to Words tool to produce the words in Bangla or English.

Quick mental conversions

To turn lakh into millions, divide by 10: 45 lakh is 4.5 million. To turn crore into millions, multiply by 10: 3.2 crore is 32 million. To turn crore into billions, divide by 100: 250 crore is 2.5 billion. To go the other way, reverse the operation.

Where mistakes happen

News reports, company results and budget documents move between systems all the time. A headline that says "Tk 5 crore" for a loan is Tk 50 million, not 5 million. When in doubt, write the full number with commas for both systems and compare.
