About this tool
Enter your other taxable income and the gain. The calculator removes the £3,000 annual exempt amount, then taxes the rest at 18 percent inside your basic-rate band and 24 percent above it. Rates and thresholds are for the 2026-27 tax year and can change. A guide only, check gov.uk for the official figures.
How it works
Capital gains tax applies to the profit when you sell an asset such as shares or a buy-to-let. Your gain is added on top of your other income to see how much falls in the basic-rate band. Losses from the same year reduce the gain.
Example
With £50,000 income and a £20,000 gain, £17,000 is taxable. About £7,700 is at 18 percent and the rest at 24 percent.
Not covered
Your main home is normally exempt, and gains inside an ISA or pension are tax free. Business asset disposal relief and gifts between spouses are special cases that are not modelled here.
计算示例
With the boxes at their starting values (Other taxable income (£): 50000; Total gains (£): 20000; Losses to set off (£): 0), the tool shows: Gain after losses (£): 20,000; Covered by exempt amount (£): 3,000; Taxable gain (£): 17,000; Tax at 18% (£): 49; Tax at 24% (£): 4,015; Capital gains tax (£): 4,064. Change any box to see your own numbers. The result updates as you type, and nothing leaves your browser.
