How to Use an Online Metronome With Tap Tempo (and Set the Right BPM)
Set a steady beat for practising music, choose beats per bar and find a song's tempo by tapping. Free, in your browser.

A metronome keeps time when you practise an instrument, sing or dance. An online one is always at hand and does not need batteries.
Quick answer
Set the tempo with the slider or tap the beat on Tap, choose beats per bar, and press start. The first beat has a higher click.
Understanding BPM
BPM means beats per minute.
| Tempo name | BPM |
|---|---|
| Largo | 40 to 60 |
| Adagio | 66 to 76 |
| Andante | 76 to 108 |
| Moderato | 108 to 120 |
| Allegro | 120 to 156 |
| Presto | 168 to 200 |
Steps
- Open the tool.
- Set tempo by slider, or tap the beat four or more times.
- Set beats per bar (4 for common time, 3 for waltz).
- Press start and play along.
Practice tips
- Start slow, then increase by 5 BPM when you can play cleanly.
- Practise scales and hard passages at 60 percent of the final tempo.
- Subdivide: count "1 and 2 and" when playing eighth notes.
- Put the click on beats 2 and 4 only to build a groove sense.
About the timing
The tool uses precise audio timing from the browser so the beat stays steady even when the page is busy.
Finding a song's tempo
Play the song and tap along to the beat; the BPM adjusts to your taps.
