How to Test and Improve Your Typing Speed (WPM and Accuracy)
Measure your typing speed in words per minute, check your accuracy and follow simple practice habits to get faster over a few weeks.
Typing speed affects almost every office job, exam and study session. Faster typing means finished work sooner and less strain. Some job tests set a minimum such as 30 or 40 words per minute, and data-entry roles often expect more. The good news is that typing is a learnable skill, and you can measure your starting point in a minute.
The free Typing Speed Test shows your words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy.
Quick answer
Open the Typing Speed Test, type the sentence shown, and read your WPM and accuracy when you finish. Repeat with new sentences to improve. Pasting is turned off so the score is fair.
How the test works
The test starts when you press the first key. When you finish, it shows your speed in words per minute and your accuracy. WPM is the number of words in the sentence divided by the time in minutes. You can try again with a new sentence as often as you like.
What counts as a good score?
- About 40 WPM is typical for an average typist.
- 60 WPM or more is fast.
- 80 WPM or more is very fast.
Accuracy matters as much as speed. A fast typist who makes many mistakes spends the saved time fixing them. Aim for 95 percent or higher before pushing for speed.
Habits that make you faster
- Look at the screen, not the keys. Looking down breaks your flow. Learn the home row position: fingers resting on A, S, D, F and J, K, L and semicolon.
- Use all fingers. Each finger has its own keys. It feels slow for a week and then speeds up.
- Accuracy first. Slow down until you type cleanly. Speed comes naturally with repetition.
- Keep a steady rhythm. Even keystrokes beat bursts and pauses.
- Sit well. Back straight, wrists relaxed, elbows near a right angle, screen at eye level.
- Practise a little every day. Ten minutes daily beats one long weekend session.
A simple four-week plan
- Week 1: Take a test to find your baseline. Practise the home row slowly with focus on correct fingers.
- Week 2: Add the top and bottom rows. Do three short tests daily and note your accuracy.
- Week 3: Type real text such as an article or your own notes, aiming at 95 percent accuracy.
- Week 4: Increase speed gradually. Test again and compare with week 1.
Typing in Bangla
Many people type Bangla using a phonetic keyboard or a layout such as Avro. The same habits apply: accuracy before speed, correct fingers, regular practice. If you are working with old text typed in Bijoy, the Bijoy to Unicode tool helps you move it to Unicode.
Why the test blocks pasting
If you could paste the sentence, the score would mean nothing. Pasting is disabled so that your WPM reflects real typing.
