About this tool
A US passport has several fees, paid to two different places, and a mistake in the payment can delay an application. This calculator adds them up for your case: first-time adult, renewal, a child under 16 or a lost or damaged passport; a book, a card or both; routine or expedited service; and optional 1-2 day delivery. It also separates what you pay the Department of State from what you pay the acceptance facility, and it works for several people at once. All fees are in an editable table.
Who this is for Families applying together, people planning a trip who need to decide whether expedited service is worth it, and anyone helping a parent or relative with an application. Knowing the split between the government fee and the facility fee matters because they are paid separately, usually by check or money order for the first and by another method for the second.
What the fees are The application fee depends on the age and type: $130 for an adult passport book, $100 for a child under 16, $30 for an adult passport card and $15 for a child card. The execution fee of $35 applies to first-time applications, children and replacements of a lost or damaged passport, which must be done in person at an acceptance facility. Adult renewals by mail pay the application fee only. Expedited service adds $60, and a 1-2 day delivery of the finished passport has an extra charge of about $22 for a book.
Book, card or both A passport book is valid for international travel by air, sea and land; a passport card is cheaper but is valid only for land and sea crossings with Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, and not for flights. Applying for both costs the sum of both fees and, for first-time applications, two execution fees. The calculator shows that clearly.
Worked example A first-time adult passport book with routine service costs $130 plus the $35 execution fee: $165. The same application with expedited service is $225. A family of four with two adults renewing (by mail) and two children applying for the first time is a combination you can calculate by running the tool for each group and adding the totals; for a group with the same type, set the number of people.
Tips Check the fees on the State Department page on the day you apply, because they change. Use the editable table to type a new fee. Remember photo costs and any postage you plan to pay, which can be added in the photo box. This is an estimate and not an official fee statement.
Worked example
A first-time adult passport book with routine service shows $130 to the Department of State and $35 to the acceptance facility, $165 per person. Switch to expedited service and the total becomes $225.
