About this tool

Enter the length, width and compacted depth and choose the material. The calculator gives the area, the volume in cubic yards and the tons, with 10% extra.

Formula

Volume in cubic feet = length × width × depth in feet. Tons = volume × density ÷ 2,000. Asphalt weighs about 145 pounds per cubic foot, crushed gravel about 105 pounds and sand about 100 pounds when compacted.

Depths

A residential driveway needs about 2 to 3 inches of asphalt over 4 to 8 inches of compacted gravel base. Gravel drives use 4 to 6 inches.

Order

Add 5% to 10% for compaction and spreading losses. Materials are usually sold by the ton.

Worked example

A 60 × 12 ft driveway of asphalt 3 inches thick is 720 ft², 6.67 cubic yards or 13.05 tons, and 14.36 tons with 10% extra.

Tips for best results

Check every box before you rely on a result, because one wrong digit changes the whole answer. Use the exact figures from your payslip, bill, certificate or contract, and keep a note of the date you calculated. Rates, thresholds and rules change from time to time, so for tax, fees and legal matters treat the output as an estimate and confirm with the official source named on this page. You can run as many scenarios as you like; nothing is saved or sent, and refreshing the page clears the boxes.
