How to Find the Week Number of Any Date (ISO Weeks Explained)
Find the ISO week number, day of the year and quarter of any date, and learn why week 1 and week 53 behave differently in different countries.

Project plans, shipping schedules, payroll and school timetables often refer to "week 32" rather than a date. The idea is simple, but the rules for what counts as week 1 are not, and mixing them up causes missed deadlines. The free Week Number Finder gives the ISO week of any date, with the day of the year and the quarter.
Quick answer
Pick a date and read the week number. Today's example: 10 October 2026 falls in ISO week 41, on a Saturday. The ISO year is 2026, it is day 283 of the year and the date is in Q4.

The ISO 8601 rules
The international standard ISO 8601 defines week numbers like this:
- A week runs from Monday to Sunday.
- Week 1 is the week that contains the first Thursday of the year. Equivalently, it is the week that contains 4 January.
- A year has 52 or 53 weeks.
Because of rule 2, the first days of January can belong to week 52 or 53 of the previous year, and the last days of December can belong to week 1 of the next year. For example, 1 January 2026 is a Thursday, so it is in week 1 of 2026. 31 December 2026 is also a Thursday, which makes 2026 a 53-week year.
Other week-numbering systems
| System | Week starts | Week 1 is | Used in |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISO 8601 | Monday | Contains first Thursday | Europe, much of Asia, business |
| North American | Sunday | Contains 1 January | USA, Canada, Excel default |
| Middle East | Saturday | Contains 1 January | Some Gulf countries |
That is why a spreadsheet may show a week number that differs from a European calendar. Always agree on the system when you share a plan across countries.
