About this tool
Enter a yearly salary or profit and choose employee (Class 1) or self-employed (Class 4). The calculator applies the main rate to earnings between the primary threshold and the upper limit and the additional rate above it. Rates and thresholds are for the 2026-27 tax year and can change. A guide only, check gov.uk for the official figures.
How it is worked out
Employees pay 8 percent on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 a year and 2 percent above that. Self-employed people pay Class 4 contributions at 6 percent on profits between the same limits and 2 percent above. Employers pay 15 percent on a worker's earnings above £5,000, which is shown for comparison but is not taken from your pay.
Example
On a £45,000 salary an employee pays 8 percent of £32,430, which is about £2,594 a year or £216 a month.
Tips
National Insurance builds your State Pension record. If your pay is between the lower earnings limit and the threshold you can still get a qualifying year without paying.
Contoh berselesaian
With the boxes at their starting values (Yearly salary or profit (£): 45000; Type: Employee (Class 1)), the tool shows: Per month (£): 216.20; Per week (£): 49.89; Share of your pay: 5.8%; Employer's NI on top (£): 6,000; National Insurance per year (£): 2,594. Change any box to see your own numbers. The result updates as you type, and nothing leaves your browser.
Ringkasnya
Soalan lazim
Is National Insurance the same as income tax?
No. Income tax and National Insurance are separate. NI helps build your State Pension and some benefits.
Do I pay NI on a pension contribution?
Through workplace schemes that take pension from your pay before tax (salary sacrifice) you may pay less NI, but ordinary net pay arrangements do not reduce NI.
What changes for the self-employed?
Class 4 NI is 6 percent on profits in the main band. Class 2 is no longer compulsory, though a voluntary payment can fill gaps in a State Pension record.
Which year are the rates for?
The 2026-27 tax year, 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027.
