About this tool
Enter your taxable income, the gain, whether you held the asset more than a year and your filing status. Long-term gains are taxed at 0, 15 or 20 percent and short-term gains at ordinary rates, stacked on top of your income. Figures are for the 2026 tax year and can change. A guide only, check irs.gov or a tax professional.
Short and long term
Assets held for a year or less produce short-term gains that are taxed like ordinary income. Assets held longer than a year get the lower long-term rates of 0, 15 and 20 percent, based on your taxable income.
Example
A single filer with $80,000 taxable income and a $25,000 long-term gain pays 15 percent on the whole gain, about $3,750.
Not included
The 3.8 percent net investment income tax for high earners, state tax, collectibles at 28 percent and the home sale exclusion are not modelled.

よくある質問
How long must I hold for the long-term rate?
More than one year, counted from the day after you buy to the day you sell.
Is there a 0 percent rate?
Yes, when your taxable income is below the threshold for your filing status.
Are losses deductible?
Capital losses offset gains, and up to $3,000 a year can reduce ordinary income. Net the losses before you enter the gain.
Does this include state tax?
No. Most states tax gains as ordinary income.
