How to Calculate Exact Age From Date of Birth (Years, Months and Days)

"What is your age as of 1 January?" Job circulars, school admissions and exams often ask for age on a specific date, and the answer has to be exact in years, months and days. Counting on your fingers leads to mistakes, especially across leap years. The free Age Calculator gives the exact answer in a second.

Quick answer

Open the Age Calculator, enter your date of birth, and optionally the "As of" date. You see your age in years, months and days, plus the total months, weeks and days, your weekday of birth and the days left until your next birthday.

How to calculate the age, step by step

  1. Open the Age Calculator.
  2. Enter the date of birth.
  3. Leave "As of" empty to use today's date, or enter the date on which the age is needed, for example the closing date of a job circular.
  4. Read the result: years, months and days.

To find the time between any two dates, choose "Between two dates" and enter both.

Why "age as of a date" matters

Many circulars say things like "age must not exceed 30 years as of 31 December". Your age today is not what counts, your age on that date is. By typing the stated date in the "As of" box, you immediately see whether you are within the limit and by how many days.

What you get besides the age

  • Total months, weeks and days lived, which is handy for forms that ask for age in months.
  • The weekday you were born, a nice fact and sometimes needed on forms.
  • Days until your next birthday.

How the calculation works

Age is counted by completed years first, then completed months, then remaining days. If you were born on 15 March 2000, then on 14 March 2026 you are 25 years, 11 months and some days, and on 15 March 2026 you turn 26. For people born on 29 February, in years that are not leap years the tool takes 28 February as the birthday.

Common situations

  • Government job applications with maximum and minimum age limits.
  • School and college admission with a cut-off date.
  • Exam registration with age requirements.
  • Insurance, retirement and pension planning dates.
  • Everyday curiosity, for example how many days you have lived.

Tips

  • Check the exact date format of the circular so you do not confuse day and month.
  • Compare with the official cut-off date, not the application date.
  • Keep a screenshot of the result if you need to justify your calculation.

Privacy

The calculation runs in your browser. The dates you type are not sent anywhere.

Real situations that need an exact age

Government job circulars. Rules usually give a maximum age as of a closing date, and some give relaxations for particular groups. A single day can decide eligibility.

School admission. Many schools require children to be a certain age on 1 January or another cut-off date.

Exam registration. Age limits for competitive exams are checked against an official date.

Insurance, pensions and retirement. Benefits often depend on exact age in years and months.

Examples worked by hand

Suppose someone was born on 20 August 1996 and the cut-off is 31 December 2026:

  • Completed years: 2026 - 1996 = 30, because the birthday (20 August) has passed by 31 December.
  • Months since the last birthday: September, October, November and part of December gives 4 months.
  • Days: from 20 December to 31 December is 11 days.

So the age is 30 years, 4 months and 11 days. If a limit says "not more than 30 years", this person is already over the limit by 4 months and 11 days. The calculator gives the same answer instantly and avoids counting mistakes.

Common mistakes

  • Using the application date instead of the date stated in the circular.
  • Counting only the year difference. Birthdays later in the year have not yet passed.
  • Mixing up the date format. Day and month in the wrong order change the answer.
  • Forgetting leap years when counting days.
  • Rounding. Official limits usually use completed years, not rounded ones.

Age in other calendars

Official documents in Bangladesh use the Gregorian calendar, but many families also note the Bangla and Hijri dates of birth. The Bangla year begins on 14 April and the Hijri calendar follows the moon, so a person's "birthday" in those calendars moves against the Gregorian date every year. If you need a date in another calendar for a form or a family record, convert it with the Bangla Date Converter or the Hijri Date Converter, and keep the Gregorian date for any official age calculation.

Quick checklist

  1. Use the date of birth exactly as it appears on the certificate.
  2. Use the date written in the circular, not today's date.
  3. Read the result in completed years, months and days.
  4. Keep a screenshot for your records.
