For many employees in Bangladesh, income tax feels confusing: what is tax-free, how does the salary exemption work, and how much does an investment reduce the bill? A quick estimate helps you plan your savings and prepare for the return filing. The free Bangladesh Income Tax Calculator gives you that estimate in a minute.

This is an estimate for planning, not tax advice. Tax rules and thresholds change with each national budget, so always confirm with the National Board of Revenue (NBR) or a qualified tax adviser before filing.

Quick answer

Enter your yearly income, say whether it is salary, choose your tax-free threshold category, your area and your eligible investment. The tool shows taxable income, tax, rebate and monthly tax.

The ideas behind the number

1. The tax-free threshold

A first slice of your yearly income is not taxed. The amount depends on your category. The tool lets you choose:

  • General taxpayers: Tk 3,50,000
  • Women and people over 65: Tk 4,00,000
  • Disabled people: Tk 4,75,000
  • Freedom fighters: Tk 5,00,000

2. The salary exemption

When your income is salary, a portion is exempt: one-third of it, up to Tk 4,50,000. The tool applies this automatically when you indicate that the income is salary.

3. The rate slabs

The remaining taxable income is taxed in steps, with a higher rate on each higher slab. The calculator applies the slab rates built into it to your taxable income.

4. The minimum tax

Even when the calculated tax is low, a minimum tax can apply depending on the area where you live, such as a city corporation or elsewhere. The tool lets you select your area so that the minimum is considered.

5. The investment rebate

Money put into approved investments, such as certain savings schemes, can earn a rebate that reduces your tax. You enter the eligible investment and the tool works out the rebate, within the allowed limits.

How to use the calculator, step by step

  1. Open the Bangladesh Income Tax Calculator.
  2. Enter your yearly income.
  3. Choose whether it is salary so the exemption applies.
  4. Select your tax-free threshold category.
  5. Select your area for the minimum tax.
  6. Enter your eligible investment for the rebate.
  7. Read the taxable income, tax, rebate and monthly tax.

Why monthly tax is useful

Seeing the yearly figure as a monthly amount shows how much your employer might deduct each month, or how much to set aside if you are self-employed, so there is no surprise at filing time.

What the estimate does not cover

The calculator is a simplification. Other exemptions, allowances, special income types and rules may apply to your situation. Treat the number as a guide, and use the official NBR resources or an adviser for your actual return.

Tips for the tax season

  • Keep documents together: salary certificate, bank statements, investment receipts. Scan paper copies with the Document Scanner and combine them with Merge PDF.
  • Plan investments early in the year, not at the last moment.
  • Check your deductions from your employer against your own estimate.
  • Save your calculation as a note for your records.

Who needs to file a return?

Rules on who must file an income tax return can change with each finance act. In general, many people whose income is above the tax-free threshold must file, and some others, such as certain professionals or people holding specific assets, may also need to. Check the latest NBR announcement or ask a tax adviser to confirm your obligation.

Documents to collect

A tidy folder makes filing much easier:

  • TIN certificate and national ID.
  • Salary certificate from your employer showing gross pay, allowances and deductions.
  • Bank statements and interest certificates.
  • Investment receipts, such as savings certificates, DPS or insurance premiums.
  • Rent, business or other income records, if any.
  • Information on assets and liabilities where the form requires it.

Scan paper documents with the Document Scanner and combine them into one file with Merge PDF.

How the pieces fit together

  1. Total your yearly income, including salary and other sources.
  2. Apply the exemption that your income type allows, for example for salary.
  3. Subtract the tax-free threshold that applies to you.
  4. Apply the slab rates to the remaining taxable income.
  5. Check the minimum tax for your area.
  6. Subtract any rebate from eligible investments.
  7. Subtract tax already deducted at source, to see what is still due or refundable.

The calculator performs steps 2 to 6 so that you can see the structure.

Planning to reduce tax legally

  • Invest in eligible instruments before the end of the income year to claim a rebate, within the limits.
  • Keep proof of every investment.
  • Spread savings across the year rather than a last-minute rush.
  • Record allowances correctly so that nothing taxable is missed and nothing exempt is taxed.

Always follow the law. An adviser can help you plan within the rules.

Quick checklist

  1. Enter your yearly income, not monthly.
  2. Choose the right threshold category.
  3. Select your area for minimum tax.
  4. Enter eligible investments only.
  5. Compare the estimate with your employer's deduction.
