About this tool
Banks, schools, employers and agencies sometimes need a letter that confirms where a person lives, especially when there is no utility bill in their name. This generator writes that letter in three forms: from a landlord, from a host with whom the person lives and as a personal statement of residence. You enter the resident, the address, the date the person moved in, the writer and the purpose; the page updates as you type, and you can print it, save a PDF or download a Word file.
Who this is for Tenants who need a letter from a landlord, young adults and guests who live with family or friends, new arrivals and students. Landlords and hosts can use it to write a clear letter quickly.
Three letters The landlord letter confirms that the person rents the property, since what date and, if you choose, that the rent is paid up to date. The host letter is from someone who lives at the address and confirms that the person lives with them, often used when the leaseholder is a relative or friend and the resident has no bills. The statement of residence is written by the person themselves, with a line that false information may have legal consequences, and is sometimes accepted when no one else can write a letter.
What organizations usually want The full name, the full address, the date the person began living there, the signature and the contact details of the writer. Some ask for a copy of the writer's ID or a recent utility bill with the writer's name. Check the requirements of the organization that asks for the letter, because some do not accept a letter alone.
Worked example Dana Reyes, a landlord, writes for her tenant Jordan Smith who has lived at 45 Maple Street, Apt 3B since August 1, 2024, to confirm residence for a bank account application. The letter has the date, the title, a short table with name, address and move-in date, one paragraph of confirmation, a line inviting the bank to call and the signature block.
Tips Date the letter on the day it is signed. Sign by hand or with an accepted electronic signature. Keep the letter short and factual and do not add promises about the future. Attach any supporting document that the organization requests.
Genuine use only A proof of address letter must describe the real place where a person lives. Using it for a false address is deceptive and may be illegal. This template is not a legal form and not legal advice.
