Essays have word limits, ads have character limits, and search results show only about 155 characters of your description. Knowing exactly how long a piece of text is saves you from rejected submissions and cut-off sentences. The free Word Counter shows the numbers as you type.

Quick answer

Open Word Counter, paste or type your text and read the counts: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and estimated reading time. It works with Bangla and English, and your text is not sent anywhere.

What the tool counts

  • Words, found by the spaces between them.
  • Characters with spaces and without spaces.
  • Sentences and paragraphs.
  • Reading time, calculated at an average of 200 words per minute.

Because words are counted by spaces, the tool works for Bangla as well as English.

Typical limits worth knowing

WhereTypical limit
Meta description in search resultsAbout 150 to 160 characters
Page title in search resultsAbout 50 to 60 characters
SMS (one message, Latin letters)160 characters
Tweet or short post280 characters
School essayOften 250 to 1000 words
Statement of purposeOften 500 to 1000 words

Limits change from platform to platform, so always check the exact rule of the form or site you are using.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Open the Word Counter.
  2. Paste your text or type directly in the box.
  3. Read the counts, which update immediately.
  4. Edit until you are inside the limit. Watch the character count when a platform limits characters instead of words.

Writing tips that the counts reveal

  • Long sentences. If you have 400 words and only 5 sentences, your sentences average 80 words. Split them.
  • Reading time. A 1,500-word guide takes about 7 to 8 minutes. Is that right for your reader?
  • Paragraph length. Very long paragraphs are hard to read on a phone. Aim for 2 to 4 sentences.
  • Trimming. To cut 10 percent, remove filler words such as "very", "really" and "in order to".

Counting for SEO

If you manage a website, use the counter for page titles and meta descriptions. A description that is too long is cut off with dots in search results, and a very short one wastes the space. Writing within the limits helps people understand the page before they click.

Privacy

The counting happens in your browser. Your text is not sent anywhere.

Word counts that matter

Many writing tasks have a limit, and exceeding it can cost marks or get a submission rejected. Examples:

  • Scholarship and admission essays: commonly a few hundred to a thousand words.
  • Statements of purpose: often 500 to 1,000 words.
  • News and blog posts: typically 600 to 1,500 words for good search coverage.
  • Social posts: platform-specific character limits.
  • Product descriptions and ads: short limits on characters, not words.
  • Meta descriptions for SEO: about 155 characters.

Tips for hitting a word limit

Reducing

  • Remove filler words such as "very", "really", "in order to".
  • Merge short sentences that say the same thing.
  • Cut repeated ideas and keep the strongest example.
  • Use active verbs instead of long noun phrases.

Expanding

  • Add an example or a short story to illustrate a point.
  • Explain a term the reader may not know.
  • Add a counter-argument and answer it.
  • Include a short conclusion that sums up the key idea.

Counting in Bangla and mixed text

Words are counted by the spaces between them, so Bangla and English are counted the same way. Note that different tools handle punctuation and hyphenated words slightly differently, so if an official limit matters, stay a few words below it.

Writing for readers, not only for limits

A text within the limit can still be hard to read. Use short paragraphs, clear headings and simple words. Read it aloud once. If you find yourself running out of breath, the sentence is too long.

Characters, words and bytes

Platforms count text in different ways. Social networks and SMS count characters, essays count words, and some systems count bytes, which matters because Bangla letters take more space than English ones in many encodings. A Bangla SMS, for example, uses a different encoding from an English one and fits fewer characters in each segment. If a limit is critical, check how the platform counts and test with its own preview. For SMS, see the SMS Character Counter.

Quick checklist

  1. Paste plain text.
  2. Check words, characters and reading time.
  3. Edit to fit the limit with a small margin.
  4. Re-read the final text once.

A worked example: a scholarship statement

Sumi has to write a statement of purpose with a limit of 500 words. Her first draft is 720 words. She pastes it into the counter and sees that the introduction alone is 150 words. She removes the repeated background, merges two paragraphs about her volunteering and replaces long phrases with short ones. The count drops to 610. She then cuts one example that does not support her goal and trims the conclusion. The final count is 496 words, and reading time is about two and a half minutes. Because she kept her strongest example and her clear goal, the shorter version is better than the first.

Editing tips

  • Cut the first sentence if it only announces what you will say.
  • Replace weak phrases such as "a number of" with a number or nothing.
  • Use one example, told well, rather than three told quickly.
  • Read aloud to find sentences that are too long.
