About this tool

Enter the area, the tile size, the grout joint width, the tile thickness, a waste allowance and the tiles per box. The calculator gives the number of tiles to buy, the boxes and the pounds of grout.

Tiles

Tiles = area × (1 + waste) ÷ tile area. Tile area in square feet is length × width in inches ÷ 144. Use 10% waste for simple layouts, 15% for diagonal patterns or small rooms.

Grout

Pounds of grout ≈ area × (L + W) ÷ (L × W) × joint width × tile thickness × 1.86, with the tile length L and width W and the joint width and thickness in inches. The factor 1.86 is a constant that includes the density of the grout. Always buy a little extra.

Tips

Buy all tiles from the same lot, and keep a few spares for repairs.

Worked example

100 ft² of 12 × 24 in tile with 10% waste is 66 tiles for 120 ft²; with 8 tiles a box you need 9 boxes. With a 1/8 in joint and 3/8 in tiles the grout is about 1.3 lb.

Tips for best results

Check every box before you rely on a result, because one wrong digit changes the whole answer. Use the exact figures from your payslip, bill, certificate or contract, and keep a note of the date you calculated. Rates, thresholds and rules change from time to time, so for tax, fees and legal matters treat the output as an estimate and confirm with the official source named on this page. You can run as many scenarios as you like; nothing is saved or sent, and refreshing the page clears the boxes.
