About this tool

Choose the pool shape and enter its length, width and the shallow and deep depths. The calculator gives the volume in gallons and litres, the amount of liquid chlorine or calcium hypochlorite to add for the ppm you want, and the pump flow for an eight-hour turnover.

Volume

Rectangular: length × width × average depth × 7.48. Round: π × radius² × average depth × 7.48. Oval: length × width × average depth × 5.9. There are 7.48 US gallons in a cubic foot.

Chlorine dose

To raise free chlorine by 1 ppm in 10,000 gallons you need about 10.4 fluid ounces of 12.5% liquid chlorine or about 1.6 ounces of 65% calcium hypochlorite. The tool scales this to your pool.

Turnover

A pump should circulate the full pool volume in about 8 hours. Flow in gallons per minute = gallons ÷ 8 ÷ 60. Always add chemicals following the product label.

Worked example

A 30 × 15 ft rectangular pool 3.5 to 6 ft deep holds about 15,989 gallons. To raise chlorine by 3 ppm you need about 50 fluid ounces of liquid chlorine, or 7.7 ounces of calcium hypochlorite, and a pump flow of about 33 gpm.

Tips for best results

Check every box before you rely on a result, because one wrong digit changes the whole answer. Use the exact figures from your payslip, bill, certificate or contract, and keep a note of the date you calculated. Rates, thresholds and rules change from time to time, so for tax, fees and legal matters treat the output as an estimate and confirm with the official source named on this page. You can run as many scenarios as you like; nothing is saved or sent, and refreshing the page clears the boxes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find average depth?

Add the shallow and deep depths and divide by two, for a pool with a steady slope.

Is the dose exact?

It is a good estimate. Test the water and add in steps.

What is a safe free chlorine level?

Typically 1 to 3 ppm.

Can I mix chemicals?

Never mix chlorine products; add them separately according to the labels.
