About this tool
Enter your coverage type, balance, yearly contribution, expected return, years and tax rates. The calculator caps your contribution at the IRS limit, shows the tax you save each year, projects the balance with monthly compounding and compares it with investing the same money in a taxable account.
Limits used
HSA contribution limits are $4,400 for self-only coverage and $8,750 for family coverage in 2026 ($4,300 and $8,550 in 2025), plus $1,000 if you are 55 or older. The limit includes any employer contribution.
The three tax benefits
Contributions are deductible (or pre-tax through payroll, which also avoids the 7.65% FICA tax), growth is tax free, and withdrawals for qualified medical costs are tax free. Some states, such as California and New Jersey, do not follow the federal rules.
How the comparison works
The taxable account gets the same take-home cost: each year you invest the contribution after tax, and the yearly growth is reduced by the tax rate you enter on investment gains. Money taken out of an HSA for non-medical costs is taxed and, before age 65, carries a 20% penalty, which the tool does not model.
Worked example
Family coverage in 2026, $8,750 a year for 25 years at 6% from a $3,000 start, in the 22% federal and 5% state brackets with payroll deduction: the yearly tax saving is $3,032 and the HSA reaches about $518,700, against about $298,700 for the same cost in a taxable account.
Tips for best results
Check every box before you rely on a result, because one wrong digit changes the whole answer. Use the exact figures from your payslip, bill, certificate or contract, and keep a note of the date you calculated. Rates, thresholds and rules change from time to time, so for tax, fees and legal matters treat the output as an estimate and confirm with the official source named on this page. You can run as many scenarios as you like; nothing is saved or sent, and refreshing the page clears the boxes.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put in more than the limit?
No. The tool counts only the limit and tells you when your amount was cut. Excess contributions are taxed unless you take them out.
Does the employer contribution count?
Yes, it counts toward the limit. Enter the total of your own and your employer's yearly contributions.
Is HSA growth really tax free?
Yes at the federal level if the money is used for qualified medical expenses. A few states tax the growth.
What if I leave the money invested for decades?
That is the idea behind the projection. Keep receipts for medical costs you paid out of pocket, because you can reimburse yourself later.
