About this tool
Enter your foreign earned income, the number of days you qualified in the year and your housing costs. The calculator applies the exclusion limit (pro-rated by days), the housing exclusion, and the stacking rule that taxes the rest of your income at the rates that would have applied without the exclusion.
Limits
The maximum exclusion is $132,900 for 2026 and $130,000 for 2025, reduced in proportion to the days you qualified in the year. You qualify with a bona fide residence in a foreign country for a full tax year, or by being abroad for 330 full days in any 12 months.
Housing
The housing exclusion covers costs above a base of 16% of the exclusion limit up to a cap of 30%, both pro-rated by days. Higher caps apply in some expensive cities, which are not modeled here.
Tax on what is left
Income above the exclusion is taxed at the rates that would apply if the excluded income were also counted. The tool shows the tax without the exclusion, the tax with it and the saving. Self-employment tax and the foreign tax credit are not included.
Worked example
A single person earning $110,000 abroad for all of 2026: the whole amount is below the $132,900 limit and is excluded, so the federal income tax falls from $15,370 to $0. With $150,000 earned, $132,900 is excluded and the remaining income is taxed at the higher rates of the stack.
Tips for best results
Check every box before you rely on a result, because one wrong digit changes the whole answer. Use the exact figures from your payslip, bill, certificate or contract, and keep a note of the date you calculated. Rates, thresholds and rules change from time to time, so for tax, fees and legal matters treat the output as an estimate and confirm with the official source named on this page. You can run as many scenarios as you like; nothing is saved or sent, and refreshing the page clears the boxes.

Frequently asked questions
Do I still file a US return?
Yes, with Form 2555, and you must claim the exclusion; it is not automatic.
Does the exclusion cover self-employment tax?
No. Self-employed people still owe self-employment tax on foreign earnings.
What about the foreign tax credit?
You cannot claim a credit for tax on income you excluded. Many people choose one or the other.
Is the amount the same every year?
No, it is adjusted for inflation each year. The tool has the 2025 and 2026 amounts.
