About this tool
A federal resume is longer and more detailed than a private-sector one. Agencies need hours per week, dates in month and year, salary and grade, and clear duties to decide whether you qualify. This builder asks for those details for each job, adds citizenship, veterans preference and clearance information and the job announcement you are applying for, and produces a clean document you can print, save as PDF or download for Word. The text stays on your device.
Who this is for Anyone applying to federal jobs on USAJOBS, from students to career changers and veterans. It also helps people who already have a private-sector resume and need to add the details agencies require.
What federal resumes must contain Name and contact data, the job announcement number and title, citizenship, and for each job the title, employer name and address, start and end dates in month and year, hours per week, salary and, for federal jobs, the series and grade, plus a supervisor name and phone if you agree to contact. Duties are scored against the questionnaire, so write them in specific terms. Education includes the school, degree and dates. Veterans add the preference claim; those with clearances list the level.
Writing duties that score Start sentences with verbs and give numbers: budget size, number of staff, volume, time saved. Use the keywords of the announcement when they are true for you. Describe each job in the same way the announcement describes the duties, but do not copy it.
Length and format A resume of three to five pages is normal for a federal application. Avoid tables and images if you upload a file, because the system reads plain text. The generated resume uses simple headings and short paragraphs that read well in automatic systems.
Worked example A program analyst with eight years of experience enters one job: Program Analyst at the Department of Example, 05/2019 to present, 40 hours per week, GS-11 at $82,000, with a duty paragraph about managing a $4 million budget and cutting reporting time by 30 percent. The resume shows a summary, the work experience with these details, education and skills.
Limits The tool formats information but cannot judge whether you meet the qualifications. Check the announcement. Do not state anything that is not true: false statements on a federal application can disqualify you and carry penalties.
