About this tool

Enter your yearly mileage, the two prices, the EV's electricity use and price, the gas car's mpg and fuel price, and maintenance and insurance for each. The calculator shows the running cost of each, the yearly saving, how long it takes to recover a higher price and your net result over the years you keep the car.

Energy costs

An EV uses a number of kilowatt-hours per 100 miles (about 25 to 35 for most cars), multiplied by your electricity price. A gas car uses miles divided by mpg times the price per gallon. Charging at home at night is usually much cheaper than public fast charging.

Other running costs

EVs usually need less maintenance (no oil changes, fewer brake jobs) but can cost more to insure. Both are inputs so you can use quotes for your own cars.

Break-even

The break-even is the extra purchase price divided by the yearly saving. Federal tax credits for new and used EVs ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, so they are not included; enter any state incentive by lowering the EV price.

Worked example

12,000 miles a year: the EV costs $612 for electricity (30 kWh per 100 miles at $0.17) against $1,360 of gas (30 mpg at $3.40). With maintenance and insurance the EV costs $3,312 a year and the gas car $4,160, a saving of $848. The EV costs $8,000 more, so break-even is 9.4 years and after 8 years you are $1,216 behind.

Tips for best results

Check every box before you rely on a result, because one wrong digit changes the whole answer. Use the exact figures from your payslip, bill, certificate or contract, and keep a note of the date you calculated. Rates, thresholds and rules change from time to time, so for tax, fees and legal matters treat the output as an estimate and confirm with the official source named on this page. You can run as many scenarios as you like; nothing is saved or sent, and refreshing the page clears the boxes.

Use a higher electricity price, such as an average of home and public charging.

Does it include resale value?

No. Resale values for EVs and gas cars vary; compare them separately.

How do I find my EV's efficiency?

Look for kWh per 100 miles on the window label or in the car's trip computer.
