How to Split a PDF: Extract Pages or Divide One File Into Many

A single PDF often holds more than you need to send. It may be a 200-page report where the reader only needs chapter three, a scanned bundle with a certificate in the middle, or a book where each chapter should be its own file. Splitting is the fix, and it takes about a minute.

This guide shows how to split a PDF with the free Split PDF tool, how to type page ranges correctly, and when a different tool such as Extract Pages or Remove Pages is the better choice.

Quick answer

Open the Split PDF tool, choose your PDF, type the pages you want (for example 1-3, 5, 8-) and press the split button. You receive one PDF per range, packed together in a ZIP file when there are several.

When splitting is the right move

  • Sending only the relevant pages. An application portal asks for pages 1 to 4 of a certificate bundle, not all 30.
  • Separating chapters or sections. A long document is easier to share and read in parts.
  • Breaking up a scanned batch. You scanned five different papers into one file and now need them individually.
  • Staying under a size limit. Several smaller files may be accepted where one large file is refused.
  • Privacy. You can share one page of a statement without revealing the rest.

How to split a PDF, step by step

  1. Open the Split PDF tool.
  2. Upload your PDF by clicking the upload area or dragging the file onto it. The file can be up to 50 MB.
  3. In the pages box, type the ranges you want to keep as separate files.
  4. Press the split button and wait for the progress bar.
  5. Download the result. A single range gives a plain PDF; several ranges give a ZIP file containing one PDF per range.

Your original file is never changed, so you can try again with different ranges.

How to type page ranges

The format is simple and forgiving:

You typeYou get
1-3, 5-8Two files: pages 1 to 3, and pages 5 to 8
2One file with only page 2
1-3, 5, 8-Three files: pages 1 to 3, page 5, and page 8 to the end
leave emptyEvery page becomes its own file

Separate ranges with commas. A dash with nothing after it, such as 8-, means "from page 8 to the last page". Bangla digits work too, so you can type the numbers the way you normally write them.

Split, Extract or Remove: which tool to use

These three tools sound similar, so here is the difference:

  • Split PDF makes several files at once, one per range.
  • Extract Pages gives you one new PDF containing only the pages you list, in the order you type them.
  • Remove Pages gives you one PDF with the unwanted pages taken out and everything else kept.

If you want several separate files, use Split. If you want one smaller file made of selected pages, use Extract. If you only need to delete a few pages, use Remove.

Tips for a clean result

Check the page numbers first. Open the PDF and look at the page counter in your viewer, not the numbers printed on the paper. A book may have a cover and a preface before page 1.

Name results sensibly. After splitting, rename files so that the recipient understands each one, for example certificate-ssc.pdf rather than part-2.pdf.

Rotate before you split if pages are sideways. The Rotate PDF tool fixes upside-down scans, and the orientation is then kept in every part.

Combine again if needed. If you later need a different grouping, Merge PDF joins any files back together in the order you choose.

Compress large parts. A part that is still too heavy for an upload form can be reduced with Compress PDF.

Is it safe to split private documents?

The file is used only to produce your result. The original is deleted as soon as processing ends and the results are removed automatically after a short time. Nothing is kept in a database and file names or contents are not written to logs. The privacy policy explains the details. For extremely sensitive papers, split off only the pages you must share.

Real situations where splitting helps

A scanned bundle of different papers. You scanned your SSC certificate, HSC certificate and passport into one file, and an application wants each one separately. Split by page ranges and rename each part.

An e-book or long report. Divide by chapters so that each part is small enough to send over messaging apps.

A multi-page invoice file. A supplier sends one PDF with all customers' invoices. Split it so that each customer receives only their own page.

Exam papers and worksheets. A teacher can separate question papers from answer sheets before sharing.

Planning your page ranges

A short plan prevents mistakes. Write the ranges on paper first:

Document inside the filePages
Application form1-2
SSC certificate3
HSC certificate4
Passport5-8

Then type 1-2, 3, 4, 5-8 and every document becomes its own PDF. Remember that the page numbers are the positions in the file, not the numbers printed on the paper.

After splitting

  • Rename each file so the recipient knows what it is, for example ssc-certificate.pdf.
  • Compress large parts with Compress PDF to meet upload limits.
  • Merge selected parts again into a new order with Merge PDF.
  • Protect a private part with Protect PDF.

Splitting very large files

If your PDF is near the 50 MB limit, first split off the largest sections, then split each of those further. Compressing before splitting can also help the file fit.

When Split is not the right tool

If you only want to delete a few pages from a file and keep the rest as one document, Remove Pages is faster. If you need one new PDF made of a few chosen pages in a particular order, Extract Pages is the tool.

Quick checklist before you send the parts

  1. Open each part and confirm it contains the right pages.
  2. Rename the files so that nobody has to guess what they are.
  3. Compress parts that are still too large.
  4. Delete the parts you do not need from shared folders.
  5. Keep the full original in a safe place in case you must split again.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a PDF into single pages? Leave the pages box empty. Every page becomes its own PDF and you receive them together in one ZIP file.

What does "8-" mean? It means page 8 up to the last page of the document.

Will splitting reduce quality? No. Pages are copied as they are, so text and images keep their original quality.

Can I split a password-protected PDF? Remove the password first with the Unlock PDF tool, using the password you know, then split the file.

Is there a page or size limit? The upload limit is 50 MB per file. For very large files, split in two steps.

Can I split every page into its own file? Yes. Leave the pages box empty and every page becomes a separate PDF in one ZIP.

Will my original file be changed? No. Your original is untouched and you receive new files.

What if I type a page that does not exist? Check the page count in your viewer and keep your ranges within it.

Can I split by file size instead of pages? Split by page ranges, then compress the parts. Choose ranges so that each part is within the limit.

Is there a limit to the number of parts? You can create as many ranges as the document has pages.
