After the SSC or HSC results come out, students and parents want to understand how the final GPA was reached, and those preparing for exams want to estimate what grades they need. The method is simple once you know three rules: grade points, the 4th subject rule and what happens if a subject fails.

The free SSC / HSC GPA Calculator does the arithmetic for you.

Quick answer

Add each main subject with its grade point, add the 4th subject's points above 2 to the total, and divide by the number of main subjects. The maximum is 5.00. An F in any main subject makes the GPA 0.

Grade points

Each letter grade has a point value:

GradeGrade point
A+5.00
A4.00
A-3.50
B3.00
C2.00
D1.00
F0.00

The 4th subject rule

The optional (4th) subject works differently from the main subjects. Only the points above 2 are added to your total. For example:

  • A 4th-subject grade of A+ (5 points) adds 5 - 2 = 3 points.
  • A grade of A (4 points) adds 2 points.
  • A grade of B (3 points) adds 1 point.
  • A grade of C (2 points) or below adds nothing, and it does not reduce your GPA either.

This is why a good 4th subject can only help and never hurt.

The failing rule

If you receive an F in any main subject, the result is a fail and the GPA is 0. This is why a single failed subject changes the whole outcome.

How the GPA is worked out

  1. Add the grade points of all main subjects.
  2. Add the points above 2 from the 4th subject.
  3. Divide the total by the number of main subjects.
  4. The result is capped at 5.00.

Example

Suppose a student has 8 main subjects: five A+ (5 each), two A (4 each) and one A- (3.5). The total is 25 + 8 + 3.5 = 36.5. With a 4th subject of A+, add 3 more, giving 39.5. Divide by 8: 4.94.

How to use the calculator, step by step

  1. Open the SSC / HSC GPA Calculator.
  2. Add each main subject and choose its grade.
  3. Add the 4th subject and its grade.
  4. Read the GPA instantly.

Planning ahead

The calculator is also useful before the exam. Try different grade combinations to see what you need. For instance, if you want a GPA of 5.00, every main subject must be A+. If one subject slips to A, the 4th subject can help to make up the difference, within the 5.00 cap.

Where else GPA matters

GPA decides admission to colleges and universities, scholarships and some job eligibility. Always check the official institution's rules for details such as required GPA in specific subjects.

Understanding the result sheet

A result sheet lists each subject with a letter grade and a grade point. Main subjects count towards the GPA, and the optional (4th) subject has its special rule. Before calculating, note which subject is marked as the 4th subject, because this changes the total.

More worked examples

Example 1: all A+ with a 4th subject

Eight main subjects with A+ (5 points each) give 40. The 4th subject with A (4 points) adds 4 - 2 = 2. The total is 42, divided by 8 gives 5.25, which is capped at 5.00.

Example 2: one lower grade

Seven A+ (35) and one A- (3.5) give 38.5. A 4th subject with B (3 points) adds 1, making 39.5. Divided by 8: 4.94.

Example 3: a mix of grades

Four A+ (20), three A (12) and one B (3) make 35. With a 4th subject of C (2 points), nothing is added. 35 divided by 8 is 4.38.

Example 4: the failing rule

If any main subject receives an F, the result is a fail and the GPA is 0.00, no matter how well the other subjects went.

What GPA means for admissions

Colleges and universities use GPA, together with test scores and subject-specific requirements, to select students. A higher GPA widens options, but note that many institutions also look at specific subject grades, such as Mathematics for engineering. Check each institution's published criteria.

Planning for the next exam

Use the calculator before the exam to set targets. Decide which subjects you can realistically improve and where a small gain changes the GPA most. Because every main subject carries equal weight in the average, improving one weak subject from C to B often helps more than moving a strong subject from A to A+.

Keep your documents ready

When you apply, you will need copies of your marksheet and certificate. Scan them cleanly with the Document Scanner, merge them with Merge PDF and compress them with Compress PDF to fit upload limits.

Quick checklist

  1. Enter only the main subjects as main subjects.
  2. Mark the 4th subject correctly.
  3. Check that no main subject is F.
  4. Compare with your official marksheet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum GPA? 5.00.

How does the 4th subject work? Points above 2 are added to your total, then divided by the number of main subjects.

What if I fail one main subject? With an F in any main subject the result is a fail, so the GPA is 0.

Can the 4th subject lower my GPA? No. Points of 2 or below add nothing.

Is the calculator official? It follows the standard method as a convenience. Your official result is what the board publishes.

What is the highest possible GPA? 5.00.

Can the 4th subject reduce my GPA? No. Only points above 2 are added.

Is the official GPA the same as the calculator? The calculator follows the standard method. Your board's published result is the official figure.

Do Bangla and English versions use the same grades? The grade scale is the same for the general board. Check your own board for special cases.

Is a GPA of 5 the same as getting full marks? No. It means an A+ in every subject, which requires high marks but not full marks.
