About this tool
Enter the total wall and ceiling area in square feet, the sheet size, a waste allowance and the number of layers. The calculator gives the sheets, screws, rolls of tape and the joint compound in gallons and 4.5 gallon buckets.
Sheets
Sheets = area × (1 + waste) ÷ sheet area. A 4×8 sheet covers 32 ft², 4×10 covers 40 ft², 4×12 covers 48 ft² and 4×16 covers 64 ft². Allow 10% to 15% for cuts around doors and windows.
Screws, tape and mud
About one screw per square foot (a 4×8 sheet takes about 32). Paper tape is about 0.37 ft per square foot of drywall. Ready-mixed compound for three coats is about 0.053 gallon per square foot, or one 4.5 gallon bucket per 85 square feet.
Note
These are typical coverage rates. Heavy texturing, skim coats or poor framing use more compound.
Worked example
1,200 ft² of 4×8 sheets with 12% waste is 42 sheets, 1,344 screws, 1 roll of 500 ft tape and about 64 gallons of joint compound (15 buckets of 4.5 gallons).
Tips for best results
Check every box before you rely on a result, because one wrong digit changes the whole answer. Use the exact figures from your payslip, bill, certificate or contract, and keep a note of the date you calculated. Rates, thresholds and rules change from time to time, so for tax, fees and legal matters treat the output as an estimate and confirm with the official source named on this page. You can run as many scenarios as you like; nothing is saved or sent, and refreshing the page clears the boxes.
