About this tool

If your personal data is exposed in a breach or you suspect identity theft, a credit freeze is the strongest free tool in the United States, because it stops lenders from opening new credit in your name. A fraud alert adds a warning to your file for a year. Both can be requested online or by phone, but a letter is sometimes required or helpful. This generator writes the letter for a freeze, an initial fraud alert or a temporary lift of a freeze, with the identity details the bureau needs and a list of enclosures. It never asks you to type a full Social Security number.

Who this is for People who were notified of a data breach, victims of fraud, parents who want to protect a child's file, and anyone who wants to lock their credit when they are not applying for loans.

Freeze, alert or lift A security freeze blocks most access to your credit file, and it is free by federal law for you and for a child under 16. It does not affect your current accounts or your credit score. A fraud alert tells lenders to verify your identity before opening credit. An initial alert lasts one year, and an extended alert lasts seven years if you have an identity theft report. If you need to apply for credit, you can lift a freeze temporarily or permanently.

Each bureau separately You must contact each of the three bureaus to freeze your file with all of them, as each keeps its own records. When you place a freeze, you receive a PIN or create an account that you will use to lift it. Store it safely. A fraud alert placed with one bureau must be passed on to the others.

What to enclose Send a copy, not the original, of a government identification card and a recent utility bill, bank statement or other proof of your address. Write only the last four digits of your Social Security number in the letter. Give your full name, date of birth, current address and previous address if you moved within two years. Mail by certified mail and keep a copy.

After a freeze The bureau must place the freeze within one business day of a phone or online request, and within three business days of a mailed request. Lifts must be completed within one hour for an online or phone request. Keep monitoring your free reports, which are available every week from the official site.

Worked example Jordan Smith receives a breach notice and sends a freeze letter on 23 October 2026 to a bureau, with a copy of a driver licence and a utility bill. The letter gives the last four digits of the Social Security number only.

Limits This is a template and not legal advice. A victim of identity theft should also report it at the FTC identity theft site.
