How to Resize and Crop a Photo for Printing: 4×6, 5×7, 8×10, A4 and Passport
Prepare a photo at the exact print size and correct DPI so the shop or home printer does not crop or stretch it unexpectedly.

Photo shops and printers expect specific sizes. Phone photos have a different shape (usually 4:3), so a 4×6 print can cut off the edges. Crop it yourself and you decide what stays.
Quick answer
Choose the print size, move and zoom the photo inside the frame, set the DPI (300 for good quality), and download a JPG at the exact pixel size.
Pixels you need at 300 DPI
| Print size | Pixels |
|---|---|
| 4 × 6 in | 1200 × 1800 |
| 5 × 7 in | 1500 × 2100 |
| 6 × 8 in | 1800 × 2400 |
| 8 × 10 in | 2400 × 3000 |
| A4 (210 × 297 mm) | 2480 × 3508 |
| 2 × 2 in (passport US) | 600 × 600 |
Steps
- Open the tool and choose the photo.
- Select the print size.
- Drag and zoom to frame the subject.
- Choose the DPI.
- Download the JPG.
Tips
- Aspect ratio matters. 4×6 is 3:2; 8×10 is 5:4. The same photo needs a different crop.
- Leave margin. Printers may trim 2 to 3 mm; keep heads and faces away from the very edge.
- Check resolution. A 2 MP phone photo is too small for a sharp 8×10.
- Use JPG at high quality for printing.
- Do not sharpen too much. Printing adds its own contrast.
Before you order
Preview the crop. If the shop offers "fit" or "fill" options, choose fill with your pre-cropped file so nothing is added or removed.
