How to Extract Plain Text From an RTF File
Get the words from a Rich Text Format file as a TXT without the formatting codes, in your browser. Free and private.

Open an RTF file in a plain text editor and you will see strange code like {\rtf1\ansi\deff0 ...}. That is the formatting. If you only want the words, this tool strips all of it.
Quick answer
Add an RTF file, then copy the plain text or save it as a .txt file.
When to use it
- Pasting into a form or website that does not accept styling.
- Word counts and proofreading.
- Cleaning text before moving to another system.
- Storing text in a format that will always open.
Steps
- Open the tool.
- Choose the RTF file.
- Copy the text or download a TXT.
What is removed
Fonts, colours, sizes, alignment and embedded objects are removed. Paragraph breaks are kept.
Tips
- Special characters (accents, Bangla letters) are preserved when the RTF stores them as Unicode.
- Very old RTF files may use legacy code pages; if letters look wrong, open the file in a word processor and save again as DOCX.
- To keep formatting, convert to Word or PDF.
