How to Convert JPG to PNG (and When You Actually Need To)

Many people think converting a JPG to PNG makes the picture better. It does not: PNG cannot restore information that JPG compression already removed. There are good reasons to convert, though, and the tool makes it quick.

Quick answer

Add one or more JPG files, convert, and download the PNGs. Quality stays the same; file size usually grows.

Good reasons to use PNG

  • Editing repeatedly. A PNG will not lose further quality each time you save it, unlike JPG.
  • Transparency work. You can later remove the background and keep a transparent PNG.
  • Logos and graphics with flat colours and sharp edges.
  • Screenshots with text, where JPG creates fuzzy edges.
  • Requirements. Some design or print software asks for PNG.

Bad reasons

  • Hoping to improve quality or sharpness.
  • Trying to reduce file size. PNG photos are much larger.

Steps

  1. Open the tool and add JPG pictures.
  2. Convert.
  3. Download the PNG files, in a ZIP if there are many.

Size expectations

A 500 KB photo can become 2 to 5 MB as PNG. If you need small files for the web or an email, keep JPG or use WebP.

Tips

  • Keep the original JPG as your source.
  • To remove a background after converting, use the background remover or sticker maker.
  • To shrink an image later, use the Resize and Compress tool.
