How to Convert Decimals to Fractions and Fractions to Decimals

Switching between decimals and fractions comes up in school, cooking, measuring and carpentry. The idea is simple, and the tool does the simplification for you.

Quick answer

Type a decimal such as 0.375 to get 3/8, or type a fraction such as 3/8 or a mixed number such as 2 3/8 to get the decimal. The result is also given as a percentage.

Decimal to fraction by hand

  1. Write the decimal over a power of 10: 0.375 = 375/1000.
  2. Find the greatest common factor: 125.
  3. Divide both parts: 375 ÷ 125 = 3 and 1000 ÷ 125 = 8.
  4. Result: 3/8.

Fraction to decimal

Divide the top by the bottom: 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375. A mixed number keeps the whole part: 2 3/8 = 2 + 0.375 = 2.375.

Repeating decimals

Some fractions never end. 1/3 = 0.3333… and 2/3 = 0.6666…. If you type 0.3333, the tool matches the nearest simple fraction (1/3).
