How to Calculate College GPA on the 4.0 Scale (Semester and Cumulative)
Turn letter grades and credit hours into a semester GPA and a cumulative GPA with a simple weighted-average method.

Your grade point average is a weighted average: courses with more credits count more. The calculation is easy once you see the pattern, and the College GPA Calculator saves you doing it twice.
Quick answer
Convert each letter grade to points, multiply by the course credits, add the results, and divide by total credits.
Standard 4.0 table
| Grade | Points |
|---|---|
| A | 4.0 |
| A- | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B- | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C- | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 |
Worked example
Courses: B+ (4 credits), A (3), C (3).
- B+ = 3.3 × 4 = 13.2
- A = 4.0 × 3 = 12.0
- C = 2.0 × 3 = 6.0
Quality points = 31.2, credits = 10, GPA = 3.12.
Cumulative GPA
Add your previous total credits and your previous GPA. The tool computes previous points = GPA × credits and adds the new semester to get the new cumulative GPA.
Steps in the tool
- Type one course per line: grade, then credits, such as
B+ 4. - Optionally enter current GPA and credits.
- Read semester and cumulative GPA.
Notes
- Some colleges have their own scale, weight honours courses, or use no plus/minus grades. Check your registrar's rules.
- Repeated courses may replace the earlier grade at some schools.
- Pass/fail grades usually do not affect GPA.
